The Central Command for Maritime Emergencies (CCME) announced that about 6,000 liters of oil spilled into the German port of Cuxhaven in the North Sea after the collision between two cargo ships.
According to a VNA correspondent in Berlin, the incident occurred when the 69-meter-long oil tanker Capella collided with the 44-meter-long offshore supply ship Coastal Legend on the morning of July 23.
A CCME spokesman cited initial investigation sources as saying that the captain of the oil tanker had misjudged the situation. “We have not found any indications of a technical failure,” a police spokesman said. The extent of the damage has yet to be fully assessed.
The German Federal Technical Assistance Agency (THW) and fire brigade staff are deploying booms to contain the incident. The crew is reportedly uninjured, and shipping on the Elbe has not been affected.
A team from the German Union for Nature and Biodiversity Conservation is on site to assess the situation.
A spokesman for the environmental agency warned that the consequences of the spill could be “huge”. With thousands of litres of oil spilled into the sea, the risk to the ecosystem is extremely serious./.
