Environmental incident response standby maintains readiness before an incident occurs. The service focuses on reporting contacts, personnel and equipment mobilisation arrangements, and coordination tailored to each organisation’s operations.
How does standby differ from emergency response?
Standby is arranged in advance to establish and maintain readiness. Emergency response involves receiving reports, assessing the situation and deploying resources when an incident or urgent situation occurs. The services complement each other but have distinct scopes.
Standby activities
- Review the facility’s needs and environmental incident risks.
- Agree reporting contacts, information intake and notification procedures.
- Identify personnel, vehicles, supplies and equipment preparation needs.
- Coordinate readiness checks, information updates, training and exercises within the agreed scope.
- Define arrangements for moving from standby to emergency mobilisation when needed.
A scope agreed for each organisation
On-site standby or support from the response network, coverage hours, resources, service area and mobilisation conditions are determined through assessment and service agreement. Permanent on-site staffing is not automatically included in every standby arrangement.
